Wolf dogs always fascinated me. How are they as pets? Do they need a lot of movement?

They are not a good pet for everyone. The owner needs to dedicate a lot of time to them, they demand a lot of activity, preferably some dog sports, trekking, running. They are not easily trained, also they often develop same-sex hostility when adult. Also they like to bite and nip a lot when young, can destroy everything at high speed, can be quite the escape artists.
On the other hand they are more intense than other breeds, you can see how their sharp intellect is in constant use, their communication is incredible, easily readable, very similar to wolves. They are healthier than other breeds, often quicker, more agile. They are active even when ten years old when other dogs can no longer climb on the couch... They have stronger self-preservation instinct, telling them never to use up all their energy, to save themselves from useless effort. That's why they usually cannot be a good working dog, like a malinois or husky, willing to work for their owner or just for the pleasure of working, capable of toiling till they drop from exhaustion.

It sounds a lot like my dog, a shiba inu which, after all, also is a dog breed rather close to the wolves. But it is much smaller so doesn't need as much activity ^^ However I prefer dog like that, with strong personality who don't live to do everything their owners tell them to do.

Yes, I know a breeder of Czechoslovakian Wolfdogs that also breeds Shibas and he says there are a lot of similarities between these two breeds
